Code Applied by the app plumb.vent.terminal
Vent terminals
A vent stack ends open above the roof, at a height the adopting jurisdiction sets (the model code leaves it blank), 7 feet up on a roof people use, and clear of air intakes, at least 10 feet away from a door, window or intake unless it rises 3 feet above the top of it.
| When | The app uses |
|---|---|
| above the roof, an unprotected roof extension | the adopting jurisdiction's figure (the IPC prints a blank for it) |
| above a roof used for assembly, a promenade or a deck | 7 ft |
| horizontally from a door, an openable window or an air intake, at least | 10 ft |
| above the top of that opening, when closer than the distance above | 3 ft |

- Colorado (IPC 2021 adoption) — 6 inches above the roof
A model code the authority having jurisdiction adopts.
A waste stack keeps going past its last fixture and out through the roof, open at the top, so air can move in and out as water falls down it. The terminal sits above the roof far enough that snow and roofing do not close it, and clear of the doors, windows and air intakes that would pull sewer gas back into the building.
How far above the roof is a local figure. The model code prints a blank in its place for the adopting jurisdiction to fill in, and the figures adopted vary, from 6 inches up to more where snow is deep. The number to bid is the one on the job's own sheets or in the local amendment. The course's job sets it on its riser: note 3 on P-601 calls for 12 inches, so the course's stack ends a foot above the roof.
On a bid each terminal is a roof penetration: the pipe above the roof, a flashing and, usually, the roofer's work around it. The plan shows only a circle marked VTR.
What the app does with it
Nothing yet: the app does not apply this rule. It is on a course card (the plumbing course, Chapter 5, "Why the stack keeps going"), which gives the foot as this job's figure. The app does not place or check vent terminals; you count the VTRs the plan shows and trace the stack from the riser.

In the 2021 text the roof extension is 903.1.1, with the height a bracketed blank, and a roof used for recreation or assembly is 903.1.2 at 7 feet; in 2018 both sat in 903.1. 903.5 keeps a terminal out from directly under a door, openable window or air intake, and 10 feet from one horizontally unless it is 3 feet or more above its top. Read your jurisdiction's adopted figure for the height; the Colorado amendment this page lists is one adoption, not a default. The Uniform Plumbing Code sets its own height and the same kind of clearances (its Chapter 9; not opened for this sign-off). Settled 2026-09-27 by Claude on the owner's delegation, from the dossier's research and the model code text; not checked against a printed book or a local amendment.
